Example 1: Facies Identification from the Velocity Model
The tomographic model is strong but the geological model is weak which is typical in a frontier basin. The velocity model is used to identify sediment facies, sediment fairways and then boundaries to petroleum systems.
The workflow to identify fades from velocity data involves creating two porosity volumes. Steps 1 A-1 C creates a porosity volume by using the rock physics model to invert the tomographic velocity for porosity. Step 2A-2C is a standard basin modeling workflow to create a porosity volume from compaction curves. The misfit volume, Step 3, is the difference between the two porosity volumes and is minimized when the proper fades are populated in the basin model.
The misfit volume is a critical part of integrating geological and geophysical interpretations. The misfit volume is a diagnostic indicator of the presence of non-compacting sediments such as reefs, salt or intrusions.
